Once a year, on April 19, ethnic minorities from different parts of Việt Nam gather at the Việt Nam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism to celebrate Việt Nam Ethnic Groups’ Culture Day.
In the tourist area of Sơn Tây Town, near Hà Nội, the atmosphere has become lively with art spaces. Many activities, around the theme “Colors of the Cultures of Vietnamese Ethnic Groups,” are happening to mark this important day for Việt Nam’s ethnic minorities. These activities include exhibitions of cultural objects, performances of ethnic dances and traditional folk games.

So, I’ve just finished making a special dish, and here it is. It’s called five-color sticky rice, a traditional dish loved by many ethnic groups in the mountainous areas of Northern Vietnam. However, different regions call this dish differently. For example, the Mường group call it multi-color sticky rice. Some others call it Đăm Đeng sticky rice.
To cook this dish, I collected natural leaves from my garden first. These leaves are the five elements of life: earth, plant, fire, metal, and water. Then, I boiled them to get their beautiful colors.
Next, I cooked the sticky rice in a wooden steamer. After that, I mixed the rice with the five colors. I also cooked pork belly to go with it and added some special spices. The smell is amazing, right?
Now, the dish is ready to be served. Look at the beautiful colors of the rice! You can see this dish in many important ceremonies and traditions of Vietnamese people, like weddings. It’s a dish that makes everyone happy.
