Coast to Coast

Sun, sea and a stretch of sand make a perfect holiday. Relaxing on the beach is the ideal holiday experience for many people, but do you know where beaches come from?

You usually find beaches along the coast of a sea, an ocean or a lake. Beaches can take thousands of years to form. The sea and the wind help make beaches. As waves crash onto rocky shores, they throw the rocks around and break them into stones and then into smaller stones, the pebbles. Over time, the waves turn the pebbles into sand. There are many different types of beaches. Some have sand, others have pebbles, and many have a mix of both. Beaches change all the time. Each beach has something that makes it special. There are beaches with black or green sand from volcanic lava. Others have pink or white sand from coral. There are also beaches with shells, rocky beaches and ones full of pebbles. Finally, there are beaches with beautiful sand hills, the dunes. These remind us of deserts.

The biggest threat to beaches is the weather. Strong winds and storms can make the water wash the beaches away.
