Women who humbly rocked the world of science
Other than familiar names like Marie Curie or Rosalind Franklin, dedication and inspiration can also be found in lesser known stories which have not gained the recognition they deserve.
Working at NASA during the early time when opportunities for women and racial minorities were limited, African American mathematician Katherine Johnson manually calculated the paths for important space missions including the Apollo 11 - the first American human landing on the moon. Her work made sure that astronauts reached the stars and returned safely. Not making headlines in media outlets, she has always been a hidden hero of American’s Space Race for most of her lifetime.
Westwards to another corner of the globe, young intellectual physicist Chien-Shiung Wu was among the few females fortunate enough to have access to early education in the 20th century. Her brilliant experiment on radioactive atoms, known today as the Wu Experiment, challenged a major existing theory and led to new insights into the atomic bomb. However, the Nobel Prize was eventually awarded to two other male physicists for the theory that her experiment supported while her work ended up not being acknowledged.
A more recent example is English primatologist Jane Goodall. Unable to afford university, later she journeyed to Kenya to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Without constraints of formal training, Goodall developed her own techniques including living among the chimpanzees and connecting with them on a personal level. Her work finally revealed their tool use, family bonds and even wars and provided in-depth knowledge about wildlife. Goodall is now one of the world's most successful primatologists and a lifelong pioneering advocate for conservation.
Many other contributions might sadly have never been recorded. Nevertheless, there is no denial that their work, noticed or unnoticed, has played a role in shaping our world of science as it is today.
