ASEAN Student Spotlight Magazine interviewed Sarin. She’s a computer science graduate from Cambodia. She recently returned home from a year on an international study program in Hanoi.

ASSM: Welcome home Sarin! How does it feel to be back?

Sarin: It’s so good to be back. I had a great time in Vietnam, but I’m happy to be home.

ASSM: Tell me about your year in Vietnam.

Sarin: I went there on a scholarship to the ASEAN International Students Program. It was such a great program. I studied in English in a new environment. I didn’t know much about Vietnam before I arrived, but I learned a lot about the people and the culture. Vietnamese people are friendly, and the food is so delicious!

ASSM: What made you decide to study in an ASEAN country?

Sarin: Well, at first I wanted to study in Sydney, but Australia is so far from home. Then, my teacher told me about the ASEAN International Students Program. I found out that there are many good international universities within ASEAN. Staying within ASEAN is much closer to home, and it’s cheaper, too. Being an international student in Vietnam has given me great opportunities. My degree will help me get a good job.

ASSM: So, would you recommend the international student program?

Sarin: Yes. It was such a great experience, and I made some great new friends. Before I went there, I was nervous about living in a foreign city. Now, I can’t wait to visit Hanoi again next year!

Tôi đã không biết nhiều về Việt Nam trước khi đến, nhưng tôi đã học được rất nhiều về con người và văn hóa nơi đây. Người Việt Nam rất thân thiện và đồ ăn rất ngon!

ASSM: Điều gì khiến bạn quyết định học tập tại một quốc gia ASEAN?

Sarin: Chà, lúc đầu tôi muốn học ở Sydney, nhưng Úc rất xa nhà. Sau đó, giáo viên của tôi nói với tôi về Chương trình Sinh viên Quốc tế ASEAN. Tôi phát hiện ra rằng có rất nhiều trường đại học quốc tế tốt trong ASEAN. Ở ASEAN thì gần nhà hơn nhiều và cũng rẻ hơn. Là một sinh viên quốc tế tại Việt Nam đã cho tôi những cơ hội tốt. Bằng cấp của tôi sẽ giúp tôi có được một công việc tốt.

ASSM: Vậy, bạn có muốn giới thiệu chương trình sinh viên quốc tế không?

Sarin: Có chứ. Đó là một trải nghiệm tuyệt vời, và tôi đã kết bạn với một số người bạn mới rất tốt. Trước khi tôi đến đó, tôi đã lo lắng về việc sống ở một thành phố xa lạ. Bây giờ, tôi rất nóng lòng được đến thăm Hà Nội vào năm tới!
