Honouring the Elderly across Cultures
In many cultures around the world, reaching an advanced age is a significant event In South Korea, Mexico and India, people mark their 601' birthdays with special ceremonies, feasts and gatherings of their loved ones.
South Korea: In South Korea, a person's 60th birthday is particularly important and is celebrated with a special ceremony called Hwangap. This ceremony involves children and younger relatives bowing to their elderly family members and wishing them well. The birthday person then shares a meal with their family, which includes traditional foods such as rice cakes and ‘miyeok guk’: a kind of seaweed soup.
Mexico: In Mexico, a person's 60" birthday is known as la fiesta de sesenta cumpleaños. This celebration often Involves a religious ceremony in which the person receives a blessing from their local priest. Family and friends give their 60-year-old relative gifts before gathering for a feast of delicious Mexican foods. It's traditional to eat 'mole: a rich sauce made with chilli peppers and chocolate, and 'pastel de ties leches; a sponge cake soaked in three different types of milk.
India: In some parts of India, a person's 60th birthday is celebrated with a special ceremony known as Sashti Poorthi. The ceremony involves a prayer ritual to honour the birthday person and wish them health and prosperity. Family and friends gather for a feast of traditional Indian foods like lentil soup and a rice, vegetable and meat dish called ‘Biryani’. Usually, people offer gold jewellery as gifts to show respect and honour.
Celebrations of longevity are an important reminder of the values of our elders and the wisdom they have gained over a lifetime. These occasions provide an opportunity for people to come together and express their gratitude to honoured family members such as parents or grandparents.
