MARDIGRAS in New Orleans

This annual carnival takes place during the two weeks leading up to 'Fat Tuesday’, in February. It is a joyous celebration of culture and diversity. Our lively carnival is celebrated on the sheets of New Orleans and is a great way to learn about the city's many vibrant communities.

In the past, different communities didn't celebrate Mardi Gras together, but today different cultures celebrate in one big event. Before the big day, there are masked Mardi Gras balls and lavish dinners, but the highlight is the wild street parades.

The biggest of the 80 parades happens over the weekend. People showcase their culture through floats, costumes and musical traditions with eye-catching dance performances and lively music.

Why not attend a King Cake party? Try the delicious pastries with purple, green and gold icing. If you get the piece with a plastic baby inside, you have to bring the King Cake next year.

The carnival is free, and it is best to watch from the street. Some great locations include Canal Street and St. Charles Avenue. However, for the best views, you can buy a grandstand ticket for $10-$80.
