Does multiculturalism exist in Việt Nam?

Multiculturalism is no longer an unfamiliar term as it exists in many nations around the world. It is not difficult to see Asian immigrants wear Hanbok, Kimono or Indian people practice Namaste in western countries, especially developed countries like Germany. France or powerhouse nations such as the USA. But in Việt Nam - a developing country, can multiculturalism still be found? The answer is yes. Multiculturalism in Việt Nam originates from the cultures of 54 ethnic groups coexisting in various parts of the nation. It is thriving throughout the country as cultural diversity can be seen in multiple aspects.

The most significant evidence of multiculturalism in Viet Nam is the diversity in cuisine and between people of distinct regions and ethnic groups. Citizens of northern Viet Nam cook their meals with light-flavoured but very sophisticated dishes, while people from the south prefer adding various spices, especially sugar and fish sauce to their dishes. Even within a small region, each ethnic group has their own traditional food such as five-color sticky rice of Tày people or grilled fish of Thái people.

Moreover, regarding traditional costumes, it is commonly assumed that Áo dài is the national costume of Viet Nam and worn commonly by all Vietnamese people but it is only famous among Kinh people. Meanwhile traditional garment of other ethnic groups has a certain degree of uniqueness and creativity. For instance. Khmer people, as affected by Thái culture and Buddhism, often wear Sarong in their daily life.

Different as it may seem, Vietnamese people, no matter what ethnic group they come from, are to some extent similar in terms of physical feature as all share the same origin of Southeastern Asian ancestors. Therefore, there is not much racism and racial tension within the country though many Kinh people want the people from minority groups to assimilate into the Kinh society.

Nhưng ở Việt Nam - một quốc gia đang phát triển, liệu đa văn hóa vẫn có thể tồn tại? Câu trả lời là có. Chủ nghĩa đa văn hóa ở Việt Nam bắt nguồn từ nền văn hóa của 54 dân tộc cùng tồn tại ở nhiều vùng miền khác nhau của đất nước. Nó đang phát triển mạnh mẽ trên khắp cả nước vì sự đa dạng văn hóa có thể được nhìn thấy ở nhiều khía cạnh.

Bằng chứng quan trọng nhất của chủ nghĩa đa văn hóa ở Việt Nam là sự đa dạng trong ẩm thực và giữa những người ở các vùng miền và các dân tộc khác nhau. Người dân miền Bắc Việt Nam nấu các bữa ăn của họ bằng các món ăn có hương vị nhẹ nhưng rất cầu kỳ, trong khi người dân miền Nam thích thêm nhiều loại gia vị, đặc biệt là đường và nước mắm vào các món ăn của họ. Ngay cả trong một vùng nhỏ, mỗi dân tộc đều có những món ăn truyền thống riêng như xôi ngũ sắc của người Tày hay cá nướng của người Thái.

Hơn nữa, về trang phục truyền thống, người ta thường cho rằng Áo dài là quốc phục của Việt Nam và được mọi người Việt Nam mặc phổ biến nhưng nó chỉ nổi tiếng trong cộng đồng người Kinh. Trong khi đó, trang phục truyền thống của các dân tộc khác có một mức độ độc đáo và sáng tạo nhất định. Ví dụ, người Khmer, chịu ảnh hưởng của văn hóa Thái và Phật giáo, thường mặc Sarong trong cuộc sống hàng ngày.

Dù khác biệt, người Việt Nam, bất kể họ đến từ dân tộc nào, ở một mức độ nào đó đều giống nhau về đặc điểm ngoại hình vì tất cả đều có chung nguồn gốc là tổ tiên Đông Nam Á. Do đó, không có nhiều sự phân biệt chủng tộc và căng thẳng chủng tộc trong nước mặc dù nhiều người Kinh muốn những người thuộc nhóm thiểu số hòa nhập vào xã hội người Kinh.
